The fact that there is no default, standardized way of transferring files directly between devices from different manufacturers that all have an entire array of wireless communication technologies available encapsulates a lot of the failings of modern tech.

@dragonfrog @aesthr @BenRiceM No, no, no. Dropping off the wifi network I want to be on (and where I might have other in-progress network activities I don't want to disrupt) is a non-starter. The whole reason Bluetooth exists is to facilitate direct communication between devices in physical vicinity of each other. The transfer should happen over BT.

@aesthr @BenRiceM It seems to me that *in principle* that could be a decent system, if the computers did all the fiddly work for you.
Like: I select the photos I want to send, and the bluetooth name of your device I want to send to. You acknowledge that you want to receive the photos. Then the two cameras/phones/smart waffle irons talk bluetooth to agree on an ad hoc wifi network, then talk HTTP to transfer the files, then tear everything down once receipt is confirmed.

@aesthr or that cameras have to set up an ad hoc WiFi network to transfer photos

There is no practical reason why I shouldn't be able to just send a game screenshot from my game console to my phone without going through some cloud service, or to just give a fellow student that PDF we both need to read from my Linux laptop to their Windows laptop or MacBook.
