Did the people who are screaming mad that James Gunn called Superman an "immigrant story" & said it was "about kindness" really think Superman is for them? Because that's fucking ridiculous.

If the fact that the movie is supposedly about kindness upsets you before you even watch it, I'm just going to say it: I don't think you're a fan of Superman the character.

They never liked or cared about Superman.

I get now why the "Superman is boring" idea got so entrenched (I used to believe it too). It's not because he's too powerful, as they claim—Superman can lose after all—he's just too good, & a certain kind of person is uninterested in stories where the protagonists are unambiguously kind & compassionate. They don't enjoy that & they don't know why other people would, but they sure blabber their opinions a lot online.

I think this goes beyond "did you not understand Star Trek?" because this is people struggling with the general idea of an extremely famous & popular character, which they are pretending to care about.

It's the same media/cultural literacy problem as always but magnified. Like "Superman is kind" is a very uncontroversial thing to say about the character. There have been some depictions that are not kind (thanks, Frank Miller & Zac Snyder), but in general that's one of his traits.

And then there's Sean Gunn, and I think this is fucking hilarious in terms of just saying "fuck you" to those assholes.

      >"My reaction to [the backlash] is that it is exactly what the movie is about,” he said. “We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way."

I can't wait to see this film.

But also if it truly does lean into the immigrant angle, I think that will be one of the things that propels it into being a major hit. I expect that people will respond to that with joy & relief, want to see it again, & tell all their friends.

Obviously I haven't seen it, & I could be wrong, but if it truly is an immigrant story about kindness & goodness, people who starving for that will love it.

Simply from a practical perspective the minute Gunn set out to make a Superman film that is supposed to harken back to the wholesome goodness of classic Superman, DC Studios wasn't counting on Fox News fans in their audience for this.

Fascists, Superman the character isn't for you & neither is this movie, and my bet is that it's going to be a smash hit because you people are not fucking popular.

I know fascists really struggle with the idea that they could be "the baddies", but come on y'all: you despise altruism. Superman is not going to be a character you like or identify with.

I'm sorry Zac Snyder's Superman/Homelander hybrid got you confused, but like, come on people. Superman saves the cat. Kristi Noem would shoot it.

@artemis Supergirl spent several seasons pushing the same immigrant storylines. They weren't subtle about it either, so much so that Dean Cain left the show in a huff.

@artemis what's most interesting about superman is despite how OP he is he still can't save everyone and his foil with the more pragmatic batman was always fun to watch.

If they made batman superman more a buddy cop story I'd be onboard. Not directed by Kevin Smith.
