@mei @filippo but i also had no friends so the whole "needs to have at least two people involved" requirement would've been a nonstarter
i wonder how many logs this proposal would result in

@filippo @mei have you considered rewarding log maintainers in ways more than "warm fuzzy feeling knowing you're contributing to the web's security"? i don't mean monetarily, i mean via some sort of social mechanism

@whitequark @mei I am curious too! To be fair it's the least urgent pager ever. 22h of allowed downtime!
If we get zero new logs, we'll finish the work on Verifiable Indexes (which replace the need to scrape the whole log, drastically reducing outbound) and try again next year.

@filippo @mei the obvious-to-me option, since you're already tracking uptime and how long the log's been running, to put up a leaderboard with these numbers up
a lot of engineers _love_ to make number go up and stay high
moreover, you can then use this institutionally as a proxy indicator of your ability to run a reliable service

@filippo @mei so not only do you get the enjoyment of being #1 by the uptime in the global transparency log contest, but you can also attach it to your resume whenever you're next applying to an SRE position

@filippo @mei in the 3 minutes since i posted this two people have independently said that this would motivate them to run a log, so i'm going to go with "this is probably effective"

@filippo @whitequark @mei Two people is understandable but kind of a pity from my perspective as an academic system administrator with plenty of random spare hardware I could potentially repurpose. I'd maybe volunteer myself for that nominal pager, but my co-workers are not going to be so enthused.

@cks @filippo @mei yeah on the whole it does feel a bit "let's find people who could do industry-standard labor for the below-industry-standard $0 rates"

@filippo @cks @mei this is a _really important_ thing to state. i suspect a lot of people (me included) are reading it a lot more seriously than you're intending

@cks @whitequark @mei I had in mind to reach out to you, so hi :)
People are reading more into my off-hand pager comment than I intended. Google asks for two email addresses of “representatives” just so that there’s a fallback if eg there’s a vulnerability and the main person in on vacation. They don’t actually page anyone. It’s fine if the SRE work is done by a single person in the end.

@whitequark @mei @filippo i recall setting up a Beowulf cluster in our computer lab out of old PCs, the admins happily noted "it'll probably be slower than any of our new PCs, but it'll be fun, great idea".

@whitequark @cks @mei updated the text not to mention pagers. How to hit 99% is up to the operator, and it doesn’t require 24/7 people.
