20th century process meets 21st century tech.
Always good for a sensible chuckle.
TL;DR - Just fucking let your car automatically update its software, already.

@saramg No thanks. Car automatically updating its software possibly in the middle of driving (I don't trust these chucklefucks to avoid that) or to brick it somewhere dangerous and strand you with no safe way home is a much bigger risk than not having an "essential" safety feature many folks have never used.
@saramg I think if you're not technically inclined, you should be entitled to recall service at a dealership where they're liable if something goes wrong for ensuring you have safe transport.
OTA fixes are a way to scam them out of that and leave them with big towing and diagnostic bills they can't get dismissed as caused by the bad OTA recall service.
@dalias Well quite. *I* don't have automatic OTAs enabled, but I do apply them semi-regularly. But like... for the non-technically inclined, the neurotypical borings of the world. Happy to let them risk exposure.
@saramg Also if their cars OTA update on the highway and malfunction, they're the ones barreling towards us...
@dalias I don't know Teslas, but my Volvos will knly update if the car is turned off *and locked*.
@saramg Yeah but can we trust how they make that determination? Nobody's going to do it with expensive hard lockouts when not mandated by actually enforced regulation. They're going to have the buggy software itself making the assessment of when it's ok to update.
