One of my biggest frustrations with using a phone camera has always been that it can't properly convey the DEPTH of a scene. With my new DSLR I was finally able to capture a tree tunnel / hiking path that seemed to stretch into the horizon.

I am so excited about the potential a proper camera brings to my adventure photos! More to come...

(For anyone curious, it's a Canon EOS Rebel T7 -- definitely a "beginner" model but a substantial leap forward for me.)

@killyourfm I love my older Canon Rebel. I need to shoot with it more. Phone cameras just can’t compete with proper sized lenses imo. Not sure how new you are to DSLR photography but I personally love shooting in aperture priority mode because like you said capturing the right feeling of depth is so important and satisfying. Can’t wait to see more photos!

@danirabbit My DSLR camera journey is about 3 days old :D
And yes! I experimented a lot with Aperture Priority yesterday at Silver Falls... (I'm not remotely ready for full manual yet!)

50mm is great! My camera is an APSC sensor with a crop factor of 1.5 so my 50mm “feels” like a 75mm full frame, and I love how it makes “focused” shots, because there’s only so much you can put in the frame.

The one thing I wish I learned earlier is not to use f/1.8 all the time. Sometimes more depth looks just better. And it’s also more forgiving, the AF doesn’t need to be exactly focused on the right thing!

You can’t recover from physical, lens induced blur 😄

@thibaultamartin @killyourfm Yeah my favorite shots are often of inanimate objects so I love using my little 50mm lens and getting lots of that depth of field. Especially for food photography or flowers etc.

I still need to really learn how to edit properly 😅

To give particular examples, sometimes I want to prioritize shutter speed when I have fast moving targets (e.g. animals, including kids)

Sometimes I prioritize aperture when I want to shoot portraits.

Also, darktable can be intimidating and there’s a steep learning curve, but it’s well worth it!

I got myself a ZV E10 (not the mark ii) after a long hiatus of snapping pictures.

Full manual is unnecessary, since there isn’t a lot of value in setting the ISO yourself except in very specific cases.

I’ve found value in finding the balance between shutter speed and aperture though! With zebras in the UI to spot overexposure it’s less difficult than I thought!

But at the end of the day, better shoot at your own pace than not shoot at all
