In a landmark 5-4 Supreme Court decision, the court has ruled that the equal protections conferred by the fourteenth amendment do not extend to women, overturning longstanding precedent established in Reed v. Reed.
The court held that the term "person", used in the constitutional text, cannot be assumed to have been intended to include women, citing a 6th century CE definition by Roman philosopher Boethius, which based personhood on rationality.
