Any open source projects out there using Nextcloud Talk for real-time chat?
I’ve been researching and testing a whole bunch of solutions for open source projects while explicitly evaluating them on their fit for something pretty cool I’m working on. The gist is supporting an inviting, easy-to-join open source community of mixed-age members (including teens and adults). Due to this, safety and moderation tooling are extremely important. And so is price!

the tutorials and docs used to not be very explicit about "use a different email",
in fact there's lots of guides for how to use your existing provider
it's part of the selling point of deltachat that you could use your existing email

E-mail address is not a problem because you can always create a new address on any chatmail server. You don't need to use the address that you consider your "identity". In fact, we recommend using a dedicated mailbox for chatting.

@cassidy have you tried #deltachat? Not affiliated, but has serve me pretty well. 😎
Uses email as the protocol for communication. And barrier to entry is relatively low. If using what they call a #chatmail server anyway. 😅

edit: actually, now that I think about it, DEFINITELY NOT. that would be giving away a minor's email address. it makes DM'ing a minor /way/ too easy.

So far I’ve explored Discord, Slack, Matrix, Mattermost, Rocket.Chat, Revolt, and Zulip. Annoyingly many of these are targeted at workplace communication which is not exactly the same as an open source project (especially around safety tooling!).
Someone had mentioned Nextcloud Talk and I get similar vibes (their materials focus on collaborating with your colleagues), but don’t want to completely rule it out. But also: what if we don’t want/need the rest of Nextcloud; can it be used standalone?

Snapchat once had a live map feature, clearly they've never had a creep stalk them.
