There is a slight nuance that's easy to overlook since it's happening right now.

In reality, there is already a law saying we *should* provide defense support. Since the 'should' is currently happening, the difference is less obvious and has little bearing.

  The key word is "defense" and "support". It doesn't say "offense" and "military". Defense support is selling arms, training troops on use, providing intelligence, etc. Defense support does not include troops on the ground, in the air, or elsewhere; or the use of weapons by US forces.

  They're explicitly using the language 'Israel has a right to defend itself'. They're literally making the claim that offensive strikes are a 'form of defense'.

  All of Israel, all US mainstream media, almost all US politicians, almost all major US institutions. It's certainly a lot bigger than NY tunnel-jews. They're all saying the exact same line... 'Israel has a right to defend itself'.
  
  You're correct that the one statute cannot be relied on to enter the conflict. However, the President can leverage the 'should' language contained in that statute to legally justify more direct involvement which would then satisfy the obligation to report to congress within 60 days.
