@prettygood @cornfields74 when the issues come down to group chats basically having netsplits i don't think it'd be fun to try and just tank all of the issues xmpp has. all of the clients and server implementations of xmpp have their own weird issues

@prettygood @cornfields74 Matrix is too. But you aren't hosting a server for that are you? Because you don't want to deal with Synapse just shitting out tons of garbage into Postgres.

@nyanide @cornfields74 @prettygood i had a pleasant experience with conduit, while xmpp was a huge disappointment. Now, I am in a MUC and like sure it works, but the clients are of notorious lower quality, unlike matrix ones. Not to mention that MUCs gotta be unencrypted or the whole thing breaks donw

@nyanide @cornfields74 two of them, in fact. I have two Synapse servers running simultaneously. They are using a combined < 100MB of memory and less than 300MB of postgres data.

Synapse complaints are unfounded redditor arguments in my experience.

@prettygood @cornfields74 The Redditor in this case is fucking Graf. He's had to write sql routines just to clear out turds that Synapse likes to poop out every once in a while. It sounds unpleasant.

@nyanide @cornfields74 @prettygood It's better than that. The database shat itself into being unusable and graf had to fix it manually. And after the whole element/synapse enterprise or whatever I trust Matrix even less. XMPP also sucks in many ways. Matrix has issues with the server side and XMPP has issues with clients.

My Signal account isn't for public convo and neither is Discord. I would rather use IRC or just literally email me.

And guess what, that also runs over SMTP. Although a very abused usage of it.

@phnt @nyanide @cornfields74 @prettygood SMTP and POP3/IMAP are already abused per se since these days you need email servers to send and receive. There was a time you could send and receive directly from your CLI, before spam became a problem, but you still needed an address at least.

So, no, early emails were a lot closer to chats, and didn't even need a server, nor a client that wasn't an UTF terminal
