The SF Dept of Public Health is hiring a director for their data team https://careers.sf.gov/role/?id=3743990007820346

If you look at 'role type' it is a permanent civil service job which is great. It just takes an ass long time to get hired and there is a pretty arcane process. (Almost all city jobs *are* union jobs, but permanent civil service jobs have far more protections)

Some advice for people interested in this role (I used to be a hiring manager at the city):

Most important is the Job Class (0933), fairly senior. Look at the Required Min Qualifications. It says 5 years professional healthcare systems experience, 3 years supervision.

Look at the salary range. The offered salary is not based on vibes, it's based on 'if you have exactly 5 years of the required, they start you at the bottom of the salary range. Every few months you 'step up' across a range of 10. If you have 15 years' experience as required, you can start towards the top end, but you will have few opportunities to get pay increases beyond that (unless you change job class).

If you don't have the required min experience (the degree AND the years in that named field), you absolutely will not be considered.

Benefits are good. City politics are arcane and weird. Work / life balance is good. Some teams and leaders and depts are super toxic, some are not. Like anywhere I guess.

As a union member of MEA, the union is pretty decent. SFDPH is generally a good team, but huge and massive and sprawling. Good luck!

also probably one of the few jobs around with a pension. SFERS is very good. while i'm personally skeptical about the future of the city etc, thousands of people do retire out on a great pension with great healthcare benefits covered (if they plan to spend the rest of their lives locally it's a really good way to do it)

@skinnylatte DPH *really* needs a robust overhaul of data and IT. They have a huge and messy number of systems and a desperate need for better tools, dashboards, etc. Or at least did when I was there. It would be challenging but potentially very interesting and transformative for the biggest and arguably most important dept in the City.
