I was thinking about the Xlibre Xorg fork and I think the dev being banned from Freedesktop might be the best advertisement it'll ever get. Regardless of how true it is, there are people who think Red Hat is out to destroy X11, Wayland is being forced on them, etc.
By being banned shortly after a fork was made even if it's not true at all you will have these people believe all of that is true and rally behind this project, which unlike many other protest forks, actually has an active developer.
