@malwareminigun that's what I mean! a country does not go from "100% healthy democracy on par with best of the world" to "fascist dictatorship" in the span of two years. these changes take decades

@whitequark Getting people to stop wanting the liberal democracy takes decades but there are certainly important inflection points where switches are thrown. The system that put DJT in power was democratic. Whether we can say that in 2026 is unfortunately in question :(

@malwareminigun I disagree that it was democratic more than the "bare minimum", which by the definition accompanying the image above (which is on wiki although I haven't put it into the post) would have qualified it as "light green" electoral democracy not "dark green" liberal democracy

@whitequark in 2023 and prior there wasn't an imminent toppling of the 3 branches system... it's just out of date

@the_art_of_giving_up oh, no, there absolutely was. and anyone blind enough (wilfully or due to stupidity) to not see it has no business making predictions

on this map the US democracy is marked as healthy (deep green) as it gets, which hasn't been true in 2023, hasn't been true in 2016, and arguably hasn't been true since Bush v Gore though that was at least ambiguous
