@inthehands@liferstate Obviously those words are unacceptable, but you have to be careful.
The clip is from an interview with Al Jazeera, and it begins mid-sentence. The longest clip I can find adds only five words (“When there is a war…”.) Her gestures suggest to me that she’s quoting or reciting something. It’s possible she’s stating what she believes to be Israel’s enemies’ point of view. So yes, that’s a way that the video could be misleading.
I am inclined to give it some credibility simply because I have heard people justify both the Oct 7 massacres and the Gaza genocide in more or less these same terms (“the whole group is guilty, targeting the innocent is the only choice”), and it is horrifying to me every time.
Re the quote in the previous post, @alter_kaker once again provides some much-needed layered context. You should read the whole post, top to bottom, but I just want to surface this bit for those who are scrolling quickly:
❝Those aid truck blockades were soundly defeated by counter protesters, Jewish and Palestinian citizens of Israel, who showed up to guard the trucks and ensure their safe passage into Gaza. They showed up so overwhelmingly, coming in early in the morning from all over the country, that the fash turned around and left.❞
When I condemn quotes like the one in the OP, I am condemning fascists. I am not ascribing fascistic thinking to any nationality, religion, or identity group writ large. I am ascribing fascistic thinking to fascists.
This is obvious to me when I post — but in my position of comfort, I keep forgetting that I have to say so explicitly because any time an Israeli or a Jew says something reprehensible, there is a contingent who will quickly assume and assert that the remarks indicts the entire group.
To state the obvious, that is itself fascistic thinking.
@inthehands I have observed the original poster (of the quote; not the quoted speaker) to make categorical assertions in a style I find difficult to read, frequently enough that I avoid following him, while continuing to follow his well intentioned indie web work.
Even if his condemnations have good reasons that I may agree with, and help to motivate his good work.
@jmeowmeow I’ve heard this from several people now. I don’t follow him enough to have noted the pattern, but multiple voices are do trust are noting it, so sadly I think I’m going to have to unfollow and mute.
