I wonder how many distinct copies of this exact diagram I’ve encountered in my life

@0xabad1dea this was actually how i learned to write compilers, yep

i have great admiration for a few CS profs who put slides documenting some of the less obvious algorithms (dominance frontier, sparse conditional constant propagation) online because their course materials were such an incredible help in the end

@whitequark I suppose you of all people would divine computer science freshman year from internal reasoning without being exposed to any of it

@0xabad1dea actually, do they teach you how to write compilers in the freshman year?

@whitequark @0xabad1dea tbh my mid-tier US CS program actually didn't run a compilers course while I was there because it was considered "too complicated" for most undergrads and it wasn't popular enough to be in regular rotation as an elective. Instead they just had a mandatory "low level" course that made you write a handful of things in MIPS ASM, gain an RTL-level understanding of a ALU and instruction decode (graphical simulator) and some vague notes about caches (no mention of parallelism)

@whitequark @0xabad1dea for me it was third year, which is basically when they ramp up to full on compsci in the undergrad program

@whitequark @0xabad1dea I think it would have been a 3rd/4th year sort of class where I went to school, except I have never took it. I learned compilers by reading open source, though that did leave a few gaps in my understanding.
