    I feel being watched 👀
    Smart TVs fingerprinting what you watch. Even if you use your TV as a terminal for hdmi output 😱

      @rvstaveren I'm pretty sure any such label would be more harmful than helpful. Box-checking exercise that would penalize good products that don't check one of the boxes because it's anti-user (like forcing 2FA) while helping bad products promote themselves (like if they have "E2EE" where the service provider is the one who attests to the legitimacy of your counterparty's public key).

      Also your smart medical devices can be sniffed but also manipulated, giving you false readings or disrupt their working #RIPE90

      Would really love to see an “energy label” like rating for IoT certification for grading a device’s privacy/security level #RIPE90

      @dangoodin @mischa @thinkberg @rvstaveren Browser on a laptop, phone or tablet, Roku (standalone device that only sees what you do on it not everything you use your TV for, and that's not ad-subsidized) or similar settop device, etc...

      I want that integrated with my TV just about as much as I wanted a VHS player integrated with my TV in the late 80s or early 90s, incentivizing throwing away the TV that would otherwise last a lifetime as soon as the tape mechanism breaks or VHS becomes obsolete.

      Sorry for crashing your thread, but I'm curious: do y'all just not ever stream videos or do you somehow stream without using smart TVs?

      @thinkberg @rvstaveren maybe because they can’t make money of your data? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

      @thinkberg @rvstaveren computer monitor is a little to small. Larger dumb screens are extremely expensive. Not connected is a good trade off. Our “smart TV” has never been connected.

      @dangoodin @mischa @thinkberg @rvstaveren See the very head of this thread. The topic was smart TVs spying on things you watch *not throught their smarts*, even via external video inputs.

      @dalias @mischa @thinkberg @rvstaveren

      I respect your preferences and choices, but I have to ask, what's the factual basis for saying Roku doesn't collect as much data as Smart TV makers? Roku collects the same data about viewing habits as Samsung et al., and they see every stream you do over its platform.

      @dangoodin @thinkberg @rvstaveren @dalias external device so I don’t have to buy a new TV when “they” stop supporting it. Plus… don’t want a smart TV (connected to my network).
