   what's interesting, is I think there is finally a strong voice on the right that is saying "our country is more than an economic zone" - which is critical because that voice on the left has almost been shut out.

The country is broke, and they are just coming up with reasons why it's okay to spend as much money as they want and raise our taxes to pay for it. These kinds of "economists" have always been popular with the political class, ever since keynes.
