     There’s a conspiracy theory that William Shakespeare didn’t actually write the plays attributed to him, one that Mark Twain apparently believed. My favorite counterargument is from “The Dictionary of Misinformation” by Tom Burnam, which says something like “Mark Twain, who grew up in rural Missouri and quit school at the age of 12, believed that Shakespeare couldn’t be a great writer because he was a country bumpkin with no education.”
