This is really going to impact the Premiership football teams, it's hard enough to get quality footballers as it is. Also, losing out on oligarchs and hedge fund founders will lose some people a lot of money.

Wait... I'm getting news just in... (Holds in ear piece) ... Breaking news, this won't be applied to millionaires, only the rest of you riffraff.

Whenever the right wing in the UK becomes completely despised and unelectable, we look around and Labour have become right wing.

@selzero i hate to tell you this, but the UK has been letting Australians into the country for the longest time. i've been here since 2001 and have made zero effort to speak "English". most Aussies i know here are much the same.

@selzero I think when living in any country it's important to learn the language. It's rude to turn up and expect everyone to put up with difficult conversations with you because you couldn't bother with the local customs.

I've seen expats in Japan complain online that Japanese retailers are only stocking the Japanese language locked Switch 2 and it just baffles me that people just move to Japan and complain that they can't have everything in English. Why are they even living in Japan?

@selzero Try not to make this worse than it really is. I'm not living in the UK, so I'm not too deep into the full political situation there except of what is being reported abroad.

For any individual living in a foreign country, it is really valuable to know the language. It helps understanding the culture of the country you live in. It helps integrating you into the society and makes it easier to get to know more people - like your neighbors. It makes it easier to get a job.

There are a tons of reasons learning the language of the country you want to move to.

For people not doing that, they often end up isolated in the country. If there are many of them, they typically move to live close to each other - which is understandable. But this is where the beginning of frustration grows more quickly, resulting in more segregation and social issues across the whole region slowly grows. Combine that with lack of job possibilities and the crime starts to rise

Language is key to reduce these risks. It's not the solution alone. But to get newcomers to integrate better, language is the first of many steps. And when newcomers gets chance to properly integrate, they have a chance to start contributing back to the community and society.

There are no easy nor simple solutions. There are no quick-fixes here. But it's a large puzzle with many pieces which all need to fit together.

However, f the political goal is to use language knowledge to block immigrants to arrive to UK - I can agree that is highly questionable. But if it is one of more steps to ensure better integration of immigrants in the longer run, it might not be as bad.

Integration is, after all, the most important aspect of a well functional society.

In New Zealand, sometimes I encounter people from India who can't have a conversation in English in customer facing roles, so I have to ask for someone else.

Ok here is your verifiable evidence.

The FA works together with the Home Office regarding footballer work permits.

There are various criteria the Home Office expects. For example for older players to have played a certain number of international games etc, younger players have different criteria. These are all available online.

There is no indication from the Home Office or FA that language criteria will be added to this.

Ergo, as it stands, footballers are exempt.

      The rules are there.

This is not one of them.

      Is that not enough?

Under your logic, if I claim that "though shall not pee in the pool" is the hidden 11th commandment, we should consider it to be the case until we find a verse in the Bible refuting it.

"No indication" is an argument for absence of evidence (aka «Argument from ignorance»). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Argument_from_ignorance

Therefore your conclusion cannot be fully verified.

      @selzero @denisbloodnok

The point of the argument from ignorance is that you cannot conclude an argument being true or false based on a negation.

To break down your argumentation with a parallel example.

There is no indication from the Home Office or FA that language criteria will be added to this.

" I see no apples in the store, ..."

Ergo, as it stands, footballers are exempt.

"... therefore apples does not exist"

And you can replace your FA/HO arguments and conclusion with the 11th commandment. It's the same.

All these argument are lacking a reason, an evidence, which supports the initial argument why it becomes true.
