Just looked it up to confirm my recollection of history.

MIT's "AI lab" was named in 1959. NINETEEN FIFTY NINE.

"AI" has been a scam marketing term FOR OVER SIXTY SIX YEARS.

The consistent definition of "AI" over the past 66 years:

"The imaginary way we want to pretend computers are about to do something we have no idea how to make them do. Plz pour money in so they can do it."

@lechimp @leyrer It's a scam because that's not what they're doing. In any of the N iterations of "AI". In none of them have the folks involved had any plausible path from what they were doing to "intelligence", regardless of any core belief that "intelligence is computable". It's always been about hyping whatever they want to do and pretending intelligence is just around the corner.

@dalias @leyrer i don‘t think its a „scam“ per se. its a scientific program like lakatos understood it. with the core assumption being: intelligence is computable. it doesn‘t matter if that assumption really holds, as long as the program produces knowledge. and it has: ocr, lisp, sql, just to name a few.
