@ocean @anildash this whole thing is based on a judge mischaracterizing the results of the research being done here; the point was that ranking *does* matter. here's a thread from a guy who was involved in this research: https://xcancel.com/moultano/status/1921596717381693751

Apparently the root cause of this article is that the judge in one of the antitrust lawsuits thought these numbers were small instead of big. (They're big.)

@ocean Their monopoly is so bad, "alterntives" are often just putting a privacy layer (hopefully) between you and the shitty Google results

It became unusable since it demands the execution of proprietary malware. While you can elude this requirement, it is advisable to use 4get to access this and other search engines.

I use to love pages 8~10. You use the work "INDEX" and you could get a ton of FTP sites with weird crap.

Today, you can't go past page 10. Most of the times you can't go past page 5. It's very difficult to find minor sites and independent blogs without very specific words.

Remember when people still said “google is your friend” with a straight face?

Remember when these jokes made sense?

“The best place to hide a dead body is on page 2 of google search results.”

“I wish I could Google search for things in my house.”

“Is your name Google? Because you’ve got everything I’m searching for.”

Remember when the results were so stable that one could reliably play Googlewhack?

Is Google making search worse to sell more ads?
        from Heide Brandes
A study finds Google’s search quality is declining—possibly by design—just as a court rules the tech giant maintained an illegal search monopoly.

@Stellar @ocean What alternatives? The sites purporting to be are just scraping and repackaging Google and Bing. They do not have their own indices.
