     #FriedrichMerz won a second-chance vote to become #Germany’s chancellor on Tuesday afternoon, rebounding from a morning defeat in Parliament that threatened to hobble the next government before it was sworn into office.

     #Merz was set to immediately begin the ceremonial tasks of assuming the country’s top leadership post, which were delayed half a day by the events in Parliament, before embarking on Wednesday for Paris & Warsaw to meet with key allies.

     A 2nd parliamentary vote was set to be held on Tuesday afternoon after Friedrich #Merz, the leader of #Germany’s conservative Christian Democrats, failed to secure enough votes in a first round of voting in the morning.

     Jens Spahn, the parliamentary leader for Merz’s Christian Democrats, announced that a second vote would be held at 3:15PM local time (9:15AM ET). “All of Europe & maybe even the whole world is watching this second vote,” he told reporters.

     "The whole of #Europe looked to Berlin today in the hope that #Germany would reassert itself as an anchor of stability & a pro-European powerhouse," said Jana Puglierin, head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations think-tank. "That hope has been dashed. With consequences way beyond our borders."

     Nine lawmakers abstained while 307 voted against #Merz, said Bundestag President Julia Kloeckner.

     While not a fatal setback, #Merz's failure to win backing at the first attempt is a first for post-war #Germany & an embarrassment for a man who has promised to restore German leadership on the world stage.

     Most immediately, it threw into doubt the trips Merz had planned to #France & #Poland on Wednesday as the new chancellor.
