@root relays aren't important for running an end-user server tho, they're designed primarily for developers running an app that want complete control over their infrastructure
most end-users are meant to run the data server (which can use any other relay, appview and frontend) and is slightly cheaper to run than your instance + way more important than a relay
@karebu@root i have like multiple full network relays connected to mine that aren't hosted by bluesky, appviews are starting to be tested hard enough for self-hosting and those do all the caching and shit for you
@authen@root not for any practical reason i did it because i could if the appview or relay infrastructure go down you can't post and if you get blocked from either you're screwed. its decentralization without the benefits of decentralization and your posts still end up cached and served by central bluesky servers
@karebu@root once the tooling is there which is the matter of adding a migration feature to the app (or on a website because its all based on an API) and managed hosting services start up (for people running their own servers)
@karebu@root meanwhile when the millions of monthly active users on their iphone tried to move their accounts to another mastodon instance after being told that using mastodon.social isn't "decentralized enough" they had to figure out why their posts didn't come with them and why some of their friends couldn't be found on their new server
@karebu@root the core protocol is there and bluesky's services abide by its rules and all of its mechanisms it just hasn't built in the tools needed for the average guy who doesn't know shit about protocols to take advantage of it
main thing is just that stuff like verification badges and other app features have higher priority compared to smaller, less apparent changes like these
@authen@root asides from pds migration do they actually plan on making it something thats part of the bluesky experience/app rather than people having to install a different client to take true advantage of atproto thats whats not clear to me
