      @merlin@toot.kif.rocks another ISP offers 8 gigabit in my city and i got excited until i realized buying hardware that even supports 1 Gbps would bankrupt me

      @merlin@toot.kif.rocks there's no way a full router and Wi-Fi access point and Ethernet cable that supports those speeds is 13$

      @jessew 13$ would bankrupt you? I’m open to donating that

      @merlin@toot.kif.rocks 🤷♂️

      all i know is that the hardware i have is shit for whatever reason, and i'm not even using the default ISP stuff (which is worse)All Ethernet cables younger than like 2 decades do 1gbpsi have mostly cat5 and a single cat6 cable, since the higher-bandwidth stuff is expensive as hell

      oh yeah and i don't think my wi-fi access point that i bought for a lot of money back then even does 500 mbps, it doesn't support wi-fi 6 either lol

      @jessew I was thinking more of a switch. All Ethernet cables younger than like 2 decades do 1gbps. As for router and AP, idk depends on what you need. I’m just saying 1gbps is relatively old at this point

      @merlin@toot.kif.rocks oh did i mention i don't have an actual desktop computer (can't really afford one)

      only a laptop that i bought a year ago because the previous one was literally disintegrating (the chassis had exploded and it needed lots of tape to keep it in roughly one piece)

      @jessew cat5 and 6 do 1gbps though. As for WiFi, yes, the WiFi itself is slower, thought you were talking about the wired port

      @merlin@toot.kif.rocks it's fine it's not like i have anything that needs more than 100 Mbps anyway (i'm used to 10-100 Mbps, my current 300 Mbps is downright miraculous)

      @jessew only got 100/40, but for local networking I would die without faster stuff.
