    My prediction:
    If AfD is formally banned, it's only a matter of time before another party rises up in its place.

    Designating the party as "right-wing extremists" officially, or even banning it will do nothing to quell the dissatisfaction that drives people to support the party. This is the case, no matter what one may or may not personally feel about the AfD platform.

    If AfD is taken out as a channel for that dissatisfaction, the dissatisfaction will just find another channel.

    Also, it's amusing to me that I'd bet this is the same people who are against legislating against prostitution by instituting the Nordic model, on the basis that "it will just drive prostitution underground". But the possibility that banning right-edge parties might drive that movement underground - with very much unpredictable consequences - doesn't even seem to be considered.

      @Gnomeshatecheese @MrAndyNgo I enjoy the irony that there is a state apparatus to spy on citizens, ban political parties they don't like, and penalise anyone speaking against the state, but the state isn't totalitarian at all.
      Let us consider which regimes did this in the past and do this now.
      Are they the good guys?

      @KeepTakingTheSoma @MrAndyNgo That too.
      Though Germany has a very specific reason for banning nazi parties.

      Having said that, I think I've seen some people suggest that some of the enforcers from the East Germany slotted quite comfortably into the bureaucracy of the unified Germany, and the results can be seen in how willing the state is to do things like this now. I have no way of ascertaining how true that speculation is, though, so treat it as speculation.

      @Gnomeshatecheese @MrAndyNgo I understand why Germany does not want to revisit that horror. But acting like a totalitarian regime by calling anything they don't like a *far-right* while claiming to *protect* everyone from the party they don't like is not a good move.
      Let us not forget that the Nazis were not nationalists, because they killed their own citizens. And a lot of atrocities are carried out in the name of *the public good* or *safety* as we discovered during 2020.
      The best way to discredit a political opponent is to let them speak and ask them questions. Let bad ideas condemn themselves.

      @KeepTakingTheSoma @MrAndyNgo It's absolutely not a good move. Even thinking from a tactical pov alone.

      There's that saying "better to stay silent and let everyone think one is a fool, than to open one's mouth and prove them right".
      Shutting someone up by force is essentially doing them a favour.

        Law against the Founding of New Parties
        The Law against the Founding of New Parties proclaimed the Nazi Party as the only political party in Germany, which became a one-party dictatorship led by the Nazis.
