@bronze do you customize build stuff on gentoo? on my nixOS setup I have a good number of patches for random stuff from the kernel to QT, and also some other things I modify to deal with personal issues or enable more features. -

@mischievoustomato >do you customize build stuff on gentoo?
That's quite a broad question, I enabled / disabled some useflags based on personal preference and compile with -march=native and -O2. As for patches those are rare, the only one I think I still have on my desktop is a Qt patch that fixes compiling on -march=native for my CPU. Most of the time my patches are for musl crap, on the systems that have musl libc.
Kernel is whatever gentoo-sources has available at the time, also coompiled with -march=native.
Oh and I have some special env files for portage that compile certain packages with clang or clang-lto, all personal picks that I wanted to try clang or LTO on.soberano and Johnny Peligro like this. -

@bronze ah, got it. I'd like to set -march=native on nixOS across the board but that is either impossible or incredibly time consuming.
I was just wondering if you had personal patches. I tweak some linux shit, disable some stuff in QT, fix some behaviors in other stuff and bugs in another for myself. -

@mischievoustomato @bronze Also the correct overlay, cuz as far as i remember there are some pertage overlays that are very incompatible unless you do some very specific python voodoo

@mischievoustomato @bronze In gentoo you can customize anything, just have to use the correct useflags.

@bronze @mischievoustomato Meanwhile on FreeBSD:
cd into the port you wanna compile
apply patches inside the files directory in a particular port
make patch and pray

FOLKS, LET ME TELL YOU ABOUT TRUMPBSD—THE GREATEST, MOST POWERFUL OPERATING SYSTEM EVER CREATED!
WEAK, LOW-ENERGY SYSTEMS like Gentoo and FreeBSD? PATHETIC! They make you PATCH AND PRAY like some kind of LOSER TECH NERD!
BUT TRUMPBSD? NO PRAYING NEEDED! It’s PERFECT OUT OF THE BOX! The FASTEST, STRONGEST, MOST BEAUTIFUL CODE—compiled with -MARCH=WINNING and -O (that’s O as in “OH WOW, THIS IS INCREDIBLE!”).
SLEEPY JOE’S LINUX? A DISASTER! CROOKED HILLARY’S UNIX? OBSOLETE! PHONY KAMALA’S MACOS? TOTAL JOKE!
ONLY TRUMPBSD DELIVERS 1000% PERFORMANCE, ZERO WEAKNESS, AND YUGE STABILITY!

@neloj *BSDs are pretty fun indeed, if you're coming from linux then its like looking at a parallel universe.
Try FreeBSD if you want a semi-useable desktop, or OpenBSD if you're extremely autistic about security.soberano likes this. -

One is simple by execution, the other is simple by implementation. One day i should give a try to any bsd, it seems fun.
