Ad Astra was one of my favorite bakeries and then they just started doing fewer savory things. I don’t want sugar, sugar, and sugar for breakfast. Give me something savory please. :/ put a tomato in a pastry. Salmon. A piece of ham. Goat cheese.

I hate sweet-only pastry options. Boo.

Maybe me going to a ‘Californian’ bakery is the same as people going to a ‘Chinese’ bakery. Why is everything savory. The only sweet things are the things with coconut. Or egg.

@aehdeschaine salmon and goat cheese danish is a very common pastry I feel! Also a super flaky quiche made with real butter and 6 eggs and ham. Also savory galettes.

@skinnylatte Aw, no! Savory pastry is frankly so much better than sweet. I convinced my sweet-breakfast-loving French-American husband that the Korean (chain) bakery near us is all we need, and now he is a thorough convert to curry pastry for breakfast. Success!

(But they have never done salmon, so I need to go seeking, because that sounds amazing, and very Pacific Northwest, so surely someone here makes it...)

@jbaggs yeah this spot in Monterey used to have an amazing ham and cheese pain au suisse and bacon pastry and they don’t do it anymore

@skinnylatte I can go either way with breakfast but more often prefer savory over sweet. (Maybe sweet once every 3 months or so.) I often lean more towards bagel shops because of this. The classic lox, cream cheese, red onion, and capers, if you can find a proper boiled bagel and not what some of the chains prevalent in California serve up. I agree there really should be more options though.
