   Be honest, how much suffering am I in for if I try to move to a self-hosted instance, what sort of VPS hardware would it eat up etc?

   I really just...want to use my own emotes. Look at her/me...stunning

     my 2 cents: it can be easy, but in part you'll need to choose the right software and perform appropriate tuning if you're hosting the server on a trash can. after that it's just endless maintenance on the server which hasn't been a huge issue for me but i know for some others it has. if you're doing a public server like i am it's advised to not host the server on total garbage and have multiple friends willing to moderate/administer the server actively, so if there's a major incident it's more likely someone will be online to resolve it. other admins on here have saved my life more than once

     @TheZeldaZone@mastodon.social @linkachus17@misskey.de I've been using Misskey (specifically, a fork of it named Cherrypick) on a ~$6 VPS from Netcup, and it's been working quite nicely. Especially when considering that Misskey is one of the most resource-intensive Fedi clients, I'm certain it will work for other, lighter kinds of software you want to run on it.

     @linkachus17 I think if I do it only for MYSELF it's not a HUGE deal but still...a big one. Actually hosting a functional one sounds even bigger
