     @izzy weird. neochat and nheko just work for me, although neochat is somewhat crashy. Element is fucking garbage all over.

     @hj well I tried NeoChat and Nheko because using a document in a document viewer as an instant messaging client is sick and wrong, but they couldn't view images, so I had to figure out how to un-harden my firefox enough to let Element run

     @hj I've kinda given up. If people ask I'm happy to help them get onto XMPP but nobody does because if I'm the collateral damage of them only being reachable via discord, so be it, I guess

     @izzy @hj Matrix's protocol is a nightmare because every chat is a blockchain (à la Git) which means that metadata for all messages, even messages that were deleted, are sent to every user who uses that chat, and every Homeserver involved in it, possibly forever. Plus it's HTTP-based.
     In all, Matrx is much more cursed than XMPP's already-cursed XML-based protocol. All of this without mentioning Matrix's problematic state spy agency origins
