@skinnylatte @m its complicated; Singapore is a hub because it’s easy to bring people in (plus other things). And the squeeze for locals is not so much on the high end. The lack of minimum wage, the relatively high wages, and the freedom to import workers really squeezes the bottom half of the labor market. For example construction work is 100% done by underpaid foreign workers.

@arno_in_sing @m i understand the labor argument (in a society with almost zero labor protections, and very little 'welfare' or help, there is a sense of 'our govt doesn't do anything for us, ever')
however i've also seen a lot of ugly actual plain xenophobia at every level of society

@m @skinnylatte but also bus drivers. At some point ~2015 bus drivers wanted more money, government responded by importing several hundreds. Add in that the main “labor union” is captive of the ruling party and it doesn’t look good. So to some extent I can understand the anti immigrant sentiment. But not from educated Singaporeans.

@arno_in_sing @m i once wrote an article in a newspaper about how we should stop being shitty to migrant workers and there were 600 xenophobic and misogynistic comments about how i must love indian and bangladeshi men.
IRL people are less likely to be so blatant, but there is still the perception that being singaporean looks a specific way
