I don’t know who needs to hear this but if every four years you must vote to keep out fascism, you’re not living in a democracy, you’re living under siege.

Tolerance cannot tolerate intolerance. Either democracies have constitutional protections and democratic institutions to enforce them to ensure fascism can never be voted into power or they are just fascisms in waiting.

@daz @aral fascism isn't the natural end result of democracy. It's the natural end result of capitalism.

@aral to what extent do you think fascism is the natural end result of democracy? Does democracy by its nature create a hierarchy that centralises power? And then at some point that power realises the fragility of the structure it sits atop of? Maybe the only real alternative is decentralisation? (Sorry for posting here, just a random thought that popped into my head, you clearly think about this a lot)

@graydon @daz @aral I consider fascism the natural end result of lazy, ignorant, hateful people who have brains but will not use them.
Well-regulated capitalism is great, but depends on citizens who also do their part in democracy. It becomes "Democratic Socialism" most naturally. But authoritarianism and lazy minds lead easily to fascism, which we now have in the US.
