When all this mess began I thought everyone here knew what "elbows up" meant, too, but apparently that was just because I lived in Michigan for decades.

It's the opposite in roller derby. You never want to extend the elbow, because whether you hit someone with it or not, it looks like you did.

@FlashMobOfOne It's from ice hockey, where the players are supposed to keep their elbows down or get a penalty. An illegal check.
