When the polls turned against him, he stepped down, let himself be replaced by a strong party leader, got the hell out, and shut the hell up. He did it all well, and ensured that his party would remain in power. It was skillfully done.

     But Mr. Trudeau didn't just step down — his party forced him out.

     I am not a Liberal and I don't know the campfire talk inside the party. I am sure there is still a Trudeauist faction and they probably influenced how this race was run. But for a man who loved the camera and who the camera loved, Trudeau himself got zero airtime this election season. It would have been a real catastrophe, and he managed to avoid it.
