GCC now supports COBOL. I find this to be unreasonably exciting. @cobolworx

That is a good feature (didn't Rexx have something similar?)It also encourages you to write things in a very linear, clear and unambiguous way, without clever hacks. Which is exactly what you want when you're large amounts of other people's money.

@jannem @cobolworx If you use it for the things it's good at, it's not bad.
I kinda like using the SCREEN stuff (which I don't believe is supported in GCC yet, but it works in GnuCOBOL).

If you see it as a precursor or alternative to excel it's really not a bad language. -

@loke no way, COBOL is an abomination.

@loke unfortunately, no, I was working with something called Acucobol then acquired by Microfocus. Basically cobol was byte-compiled for a VM, similar to JVM.
We used it for (drum roll) accountants software on windows, with windows UI.Haelwenn /элвэн/ :triskell: and clacke like this. -

@m3tti @mdallastella @loke I did some COBOL trouble-shooting on my Work-Life Orientation internship week when I was 15. 😊
