It's kinda funny to see the discourse on where to migrate from discord and there's 11,000 answers and few/none of them aren't really alternatives at all. But most of all, most aren't ready and/or severely limited in what they can do nor has the convenience and ease of use to have others move to it.
In short FOSS people don't really know how to upsell a product that will work for the majority

@koimoa aside from the fact that mumble can't remotely compete with discord given it lacks TONS of features and is a pain to get voice working right (especially in normie scenarios like using it in the car, the keyboard sounds, fan in the background, etc.), XMPP isn't that popular and the quality of clients varies, and Matrix has a spam problem.
That and the problem is that most FOSS people tend to be like Sui, fighting everyone online over some license stuff when Joe Normie just wants to talk to friends.

false, it was far easier for me to host matrix with conduit than it was to figure out ejabberd -

@koimoa though XMPP as a protocol is easier to host and more solid than the shitshow of Matrix IMO.
Matrix is where you'll send a message and it'll take hours to arrive.

@x I get where you're coming from, but I also think there's other issues that keep it from adoption

@koimoa @x good post from devs who lost focus:
https://soapbox.pub/blog/take-down-big-tech-with-great-ux/Essentially the 3 things these devs need to do is make sure it's easy enough for a normie to use it (this is how Discord got big in the first place), make sure it has the features people want that other chat clients have, and most importantly make sure it works.
Bluesky has gotten more people using it now because as opposed to the "invite code" era; it has features people want. DMs, the ability to upload gifs and videos, etc. were on many fedi software stacks but not even bsky for a while.
