     @Hoss We live in world now where you can actually observe the cause and effect of 'working hard' and 'working smart'. It's no secret anymore that the most 'successful' people NEVER work hard for it.

     @Hoss Working hard only gets more work assigned to you. It doesn't get you promotions or raises. So why bother doing more than the bare minimum at work?

     And the hardest workers (at least in anything but the smallest of companies) get more tasks, more responsibilities, are expected to take up the slack for browns and wahmens, and in return they get to keep their jobs.
     
     At this point doing the bare minimum to get by is the smart play for most jobs.
