@etherdiver personally I've found that after a while Spotify just kept recommending the same stuff to me.
I have switched to community/public radio (KEXP, KCRW, WFMU, etc.) and discovered a bunch of new artists!

@nev @etherdiver It's weird, but I love The Wax Altar on TuneIn. Reminds me a bit of a retro version of WFMU, with no announcers. Only problem is that it doesn't name song or artist and you have to ask another device what song is playing if you really like something. But it's the most eclectic, and sometimes crazy, music option on my phone right now.
