     @p Heh reminds me that one of the things I liked about searx was the bangs being a way to select which site to query rather than redirections.
     (Might have changed, used it in 2018, web was pretty different back then)

     I used it some but I think a lot of my uses were outside their parameters. Like, I wanted it to have an API so I could just plug it into things instead of using it directly and the devs don't appear to be interested in that; I also wanted something like the DDG "Lite" interface where I type in a query and I get no JavaScript and 10 text-based results instead of a bunch of JS and "HERE ARE SOME GODDAMN IMAGE SEARCH RESULTS DO YOU WANT TO LOOK AT AN IMAGE SEARCH" and I fucking hate that, no way to turn it off and gutting the feature was non-trivial, plus an even bigger hassle if you're maintaining a gutted feature on something that you kind of have to keep up to date or it falls over.

     TL;DR: the thing I want exactly is DDG's Lite interface and I couldn't make seerx do that. (Also I'd rather have an API than a web site and sreex doesn't wanna do that for me.)

     @fluffy The results are mediocre, which means that nowadays they are way better than Google's.
     
     The main thing I like about it, the thing that made me switch immediately, was the "lite" interface: no JS, almost no CSS, no "WHAT ABOUT IMAGE SEARCH" or "HERE ARE RESULTS FROM THE NEWS" or whatever, just ten links and a button that says "Next": https://lite.duckduckgo.com/lite/
     
     They also have a Tor interface.

     @p And the few times I thought about setting it up again I ended up remembering how much Google and the like hates cyborgs (as in semi-automated/custom user-agents), and how much I hate dealing with Python specially for web services.
     
     So just been using ddg lite and mojeek (bit CSS heavy but supports image search without JS, although my half-broken Netsurf can't use it).
