Have you ever heard of such a huge waste of money? Shouldn't Europe focus on, literally anything else? We already have competent Linux distros that they can use (and they do, the EU is big on open source things, it's one of its few redeeming qualities, and they have such preference due to an agenda for more European digital sovereignty eg they also host their own Mastodon server).

Better this though, than those people invading Debian, which I use. EU OS is Fedora-based.

I just find it amusing thinking about beaucrats maintaining a Linux distro. I mean, good luck to them, but I'm sure they will invent a way to make it cost 10x as much money to maintain as it should.

I find it amusing. A better thing they could do would be to simply double-down on the various grant programs, e.g. NGI Zero.

      Speaking of which:

^Let us maintain the code. But governments should always be at ARM's length from the code.

This is strictly my personal opinion.

EU-Boot, now there's an interesting thought experiment.

Though they'd probably use Heads. It has a bunch of features they'd probably want, that I don't bother with in Libreboot.

I'm probably safe from ever having to deal with the EU sending me patches to any of my projects. I like my tiny little Libreboot Planet that I made.

@6d03 They certainly have the power to do so. The European Commission has taken big tech to court and won, many times.

@libreleah On a related note, while they're at it, maybe they can ban opaque binary blobs 🤔

@nemobis This seems misguided anyway, given that Red Hat is an American company, which then has an influence over Fedora, something which they'd be keen to avoid in the current climate.

Several projects based in the EU would offer them a compelling alternative.

@libreleah AFAICT, "EU OS" is a volunteer-run initiative proposing the EU to do something. If the European Commission ever decided to start it and roll it out widely, it would presumably be outsourced to Red Hat or whatever.

@nemobis I think they should use Alpine Linux as their base. It's already widely used in a lot of public infrastructure, and it's just rock solid in general.

@libreleah Sure. There would be a tender and they'd get offers from other companies like openSUSE, Debian consultancies etc. Fedora is just used for a proof of concept because it was easier that way for the lone volunteer doing it.

@nemobis idk, probably not as big as fedora or ubuntu let's say, but if the EU is going to set a standard, they should pick better software to begin with.
