    For people who generally agree that the surveillance state is a huge problem, there's a surprising demand for Kristi Noem to explain why she has cash in her purse that is well below any kind of reporting limits

    I get the hypocrisy where Noem is concerned, but do we really want to make this an issue?

    I much prefer to advocate for privacy, even for people I despise

      @kims That said, I think it's entirely fair to point out that someone with $3000 in cash with darker skin, a different accent, or a "foreign" surname would be at significant risk of, at best, having a lot of explaining to do, and quite possibly much worse.

      @kims Agreed. Also, of all the things to be upset about with her, “carries stupidity large wads of cash” is pretty low on the list. “Is an all around monster” is much higher.

      @20002ist
      Here's a pic of Phil Ivey, playing in a poker tournament where he'd already paid the entry fee (which is to say, he needed no cash for the game itself, except to handle the side bets about what color the flop would be, or whether the turn would be higher or lower than a 7)

      Look at his left foot...

      Gamblers are astonishingly careless with cash because having it on their person is in no way an "exceptional occasion"

      Same is true for people who shop estate sales or cash only auctions

      @kims I do not want or need an explanation because the real problem is the stupidly cavalier handling. On exceptional occasions I have held that much cash but I had the basic goddam sense to take it directly, DO NOT PASS GO, home or to the bank as the situation required. Throwing it into a bag, taking a frolic & detour for dinner & drinks, and *not watching said bag like a hawk* is the act of an entitled moron.

      Seems to be a lot of it about in DC these days.
