My high school history teacher, who specialized in decolonialization, would bristle every time someone said ‘the far east’

‘It’s only far and east of London. It’s right here if you’re here, and pretty near’

@skinnylatte This always made no sense in the US and I’d love to see us eliminate this terminology. Asia wasn’t close but it sure wasn’t east either.

And Europe isn’t West. Though in California growing up you do get used to the fact that everyone else seems to think you’re West. And that east coasters go west to get here.

        Names of China
The names of China include the many contemporary and historical designations given in various languages for the East Asian country known as 中国; 中國; Zhōngguó; Jhongguó in Standard Chinese, a form based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin. The English name "China" was borrowed from Portuguese during the 16th century, and its direct cognates became common in the subsequent centuries in the West. It is believed to be a borrowing from Middle Persian, and some have traced it further back to the Sanskrit word चीन (cīna) for the nation. It is also thought that the ultimate source of the name China is the Chinese word Qín (秦), the name of the Qin dynasty that ultimately unified China after existing as a state within the Zhou dynasty for many centuries prior. However, there are alternative suggestions for the etymology of this word. Chinese names...

@skinnylatte My skandihoovian husband was astounded when I told him why the character 中 is written that way. The center of the earth. At least for most of the earth's population, anyway.

@skinnylatte Also another one which I understood pretty late was 'oriental'.
Initially I used to think "must be somewhere in the world", later came to know it just means Asia.
