     I just did a search and can't find out where that joke came from. But it's something from the 90s-00s Internet of my childhood that's hard-wired in my brain.

     mastodon is at least free software under the AGPLv3-or-later.
     
     microsoft meanwhile have never released free software (despite licensing some things under MIT expat, they've been careful to ensure that the software remains proprietary via a proprietary CoC etc).
