As long as the Mazda boss keeps the rotary engine alive, I'll be a fan of Mazda. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world The only car with a rotary engine you can buy right now is an EV that uses a rotary as a range extender my dude. I don't think that counts.

@SuperDicq I was following it from concept to mass production. It definitely counts and I want it. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world I don't want it. It's a stupid modern way too heavy SUV that probably contains twelve proprietary computers. It's definitely not fun to drive and probably really annoying to work on.
Get yourself a MX5 ND if you really want a brand new Mazda that is actually somewhat decent. -

@thatbrickster @SuperDicq rx8's are stupid cheap, cause everyone sells them anticipating the seals to suddenly give up. The styling is cool too. -

@kirbius@poa.st @thatbrickster@shitposter.world I think a RX8 is a decent car if you take good care good of it.
Rebuilding the engine every 90k kilometers is not a meme, you will likely have to do that and it's part of the course.
However as "rebuild the engine" sounds very daunting, rebuilding a rotary engine is not that big of a deal as rebuilding a piston engine. There's a lot less moving parts. -

@kirbius@poa.st @thatbrickster@shitposter.world It is true that the old 12A engines from the FB RX7 are a lot more reliable than the 13B.
This is simply due to environment reasons and emissions reasons they couldn't make the modern ones as reliable as the old ones. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world @kirbius@poa.st Yes, it is indeed impossible to make a rotary engine with modern emission standards.
For the reason why two strokes have been banned in a lot of places, they are literally designed to burn oil. -

@SuperDicq @kirbius I wanted an RX-8 but it falls short on emissions. Insurance companies treat it as a 2.6L to keep it in line with other performance cars, making it untenable for me. -

@SuperDicq I'm not interested in new cars. This wouldn't be my first car either, I'm more set on a Skoda Octavia given my wife doesn't give much thought to suggest anything else. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world Also I'm not a big fan of Volkswagen. If you really want a cheap and boring sedan or wagon I would suggest a Mazda 6 or a 626 if you want something older.

@SuperDicq Our first car would be a family car so what she wants is just as valid. I suggested the Octavia due to its VAG engine being hypermile hero material. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world Dude, hypermiling is not how long the engine lasts. Hypermiling is maximizing fuel effeciency.
You're actually wrong on what that word means. -

@SuperDicq That's not what a 'hypermile hero' is. A hybrid engine won't last 500k miles, the battery would clap out well before then. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world But if you want the a reliable engine definitely do not get anything made by VAG.
You get a Toyota 1UZ (often in Lexus models) or one of those 5 cylinder Mercedes diesel engines. Only two engines that I know that will actually easily last over 1 million kilometers if maintained properly. -

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world The thing with the Mercedes engines is that all the cars are absolute rust buckets tho. The engine usually outlasts the chassis by a long shot.

@thatbrickster@shitposter.world If your goal is to push an engine to its limit you should look for a Lexus LS400 or something

@SuperDicq I've seen a fair share of those over the years. I don't want cars made in hot places, like Spain, since they're not likely to survive British weather for long.
