@mischievoustomato documentation for most things around linux and open source is trash anyway
>find a software you want to use
>go to the install guide
>scroll down to your distro
>follow the list of instructions exactly
>it doesn't work
>the open source community is like "WOW SKILL ISSUE WHY DIDN'T YOU KNOW ABOUT THIS BREAKING CHANGE THAT WAS PUSHED OUT IN KERNEL 4.20.69 GET A LOAD OF THIS IDIOT WHO SHOULD JUST GO BUY A MAC"
>5 minutes later, they're like "why don't people want to switch to linux it's so easy and effortless to do!!!"

I notice that most FOSS enthusiasts who froth at the mouth have never read any of the code in any of the repositories they use. I am almost entirely convinced that if someone created a repository for some utility that was just straight up malware, FOSS niggers would sit there and install it simply because it's FOSS. They are one of the most insufferable subgroups on the planet.

@matty @skylar there's an expectation that your repository managers do that, and then on updates they read diffs (these are files that just detail the changes on a program), but I saw on reddit threads where people that do work on distros (in this case, opensuse) admitted that they don't really read all the source code, while arguing for stuff like flatpak (which I don't like).
I'm not a FOSS enthusiast really, I do use a lot of it and do like some things and dislike others, but I don't pretend is the best thing ever.

@skylar yeah, lol. The distro/packaging mess is a big annoyance, without even taking into account stuff just breaking or not working

@tyler @mischievoustomato steam OS has like the best chance out of anything to make linux more mainstream and perhaps even seriously threaten windows in the consumer space

Linux should ship from Steam change my mind

@skylar @tyler and even steamOS isn't infallible, there was a thread of people saying their steam decks had weird software issues they just learned to live with. But in general, yeah, Linux thrives the most when it's tightly controlled (Google, Valve do this in the consumer space)

No don't get me wrong - that's a reasonable take. I use Rebased/Pleroma, Soapbox, Open WebUI, PeerTube and Ubuntu. All of it is FOSS. I try to contribute where I can. Hell, one of the primary reasons I began learning React/TypeScript was so I could at least contribute to the Soapbox project. My grievances are with the more "militant" (for lack of a better word) types who refuse to use anything that they can't get for free, while not contributing a damn thing in return. They are essentially parasites. But, that's just my view.

@matty @skylar Yeah, same. The militant FOSS people are people I don't really like and will never really see eye to eye. I'm pragmatic really, I just use whatever works best for me regardless of licensing. My browser is Chrome, since it's what works best for me. My DE is gnome (FOSS) because of the same, so is most of my music production stuff aside from ONE DAW plugin that I rarely use, same with many other things.

It’s the Ubuntu that makes you black isn’t it? Sounds black. Nigger

I remember when I was my most zealous FOSS nigger - as a teenager that had never written (much less looked at) source code.
However, it is actually pretty neat how the FOSS world is still rather high-trust, a microchosm, if you will
