strange how people simultaneously hate the government and want it dismantled but then immediately begin bootlicking if its ICE that's involved.
If a three letter agency shows up at your door, ICE included, it is NOT a good thing and NOT to be celebrated. They're all fuckin glowies.

@7666 if you ask ron paul libertarian types one of the only things gov is authorized to do and should do is protect the border

@7666 I think you're right though that current events show the risk of accepting any jackboots

@mischievoustomato they were doing their job before according to the numbers, the core issue was the previous administration's non-chalant approach to discouraging crossings and being permissive with overstayed visas or asylum.
I bet crossings have slowed quite a bit with the hostility in force now which is fine, but now they're fucking up even worse than before by deporting the wrong people, making baseless accusations to construct pretext for deportation, or kicking out people for parking tickets instead of focusing on violent offenders.
I wanted to give you charts for this year but it looks like they fired the guy whose job it was to compile numbers for ICE's webiste, because the data stops at Nov 2024. so yeah.

@7666 yeah kicking out people for the wrong reasons is not ok, but at the same time, you can argue that a lot of people did vote for "kick anyone who isnt white" so.............

@mischievoustomato
Government has few legitimate roles. International matters are one of those. Including immigration

@sun this ignores "good" agencies whose missions are directly in service of the public, such as NOAA, NIST, CISA, USGS, NPS, formerly the CFPB, etc. Those are the types of agencies that nobody in their right mind should ever support cutting.
And no, I don't want to hear about privatization. Imagine a world where you had to pay $3 to get today's fucking weather.

@7666 that's a fair point.

@sun I think we've tossed the constitution out the window at this point

@7666 basically just saying: border and immigration are the trifecta: it's a good idea; it's authorized; people wanted it.

@7666 yeah I think you're really right that any government you ask for you're gonna get good and hard

@sun don't think I disagreed there. I want it too. but implementation is the devil in the details.

@7666 At least the people that were complaining about the left wanting them gone have shown that they are exactly the same.
What I'm more interested in though is where the ICE bootlicking will lead to. How far will they go with it and how will the administration shift the laws. Will they use force to silence opinions they don't like. Will they turn into a complete fed surveillance state?
I've made a thread about that when it first started, but there's now nothing new in there.
