@nyanide It is.. uh.. what is the word for words that literally say one thing, but they really mean a larger set of things they can refer to? A "glass" in "a glass of water" is not literally a glass, but a "cup" as in "a cup of water" in general. -

@nyanide There is a very depressing movie called "Synecdoche, New York". Synecdoche is a word that denotes one element of a thing and the whole thing as well. The word is a sort of loanword for the whole thing. Wikipedia gives an example of "boots" denoting "soldiers". -

@nyanide @kakafarm I want tempered glass that doesn't shatter. East Germany created it and the patent's expired so anyone can do it now. That glass still breaks is a cynical decision pushed by companies that have since moved to man-made horrors with plastic.
