It is disturbing to hear people remark with gleeful smugness "... these vandals should know, the Teslas records *everything*!"

      > thermal runaway

This is the sort of thing that will happen if you have a factory full of people hand-soldering 18650s together, using packing tape as a "best effort, no guarantees" insulator, and then shoving them into a box with a giant T on it.

On the other hand, you can get away with a lot of malfeasance if you ink a deal to sell 100k units to the federal government. (I'm sure Trump's not going to rescind that EO.)

@p It's good to see Tesla offering/moving to LiFePO4 batteries. All around a better product in almost every regard, sans density. Still requires proper construction (and QA) of course, I'm only referring to the chemical and behavioral characteristics relative NMC.

      > It's good to see Tesla offering/moving to LiFePO4 batteries.

It's good that manufacturing for this kind of thing is scaling up, but I am hoping that hydrogen cell stabilization tech will get somewhere. (Last I heard, someone was experimenting with getting the hydrogen bonded to the surface of super-thin sheets of some alloy and this kept it from exploding when punctured and allegedly they'd worked out a way to recharge, but that was ten or fifteen years back and it isn't inside anyone's phone.)

      > Still requires proper construction (and QA) of course,

Not Elon's strong suit. If you need to shove an iPad on the dashboard of an explosive surveillance camera, and mark it up obscenely before selling it to the government, he knows how to do that.

This but unironically, except that I can appreciate good engineering and economies of scale.

Video doorbells should be banned. They lose their right to freedom when you're invading my freedom.

We've quite literally PAID to create a mass surveillance system in every neighbourhood across every western country. Stalin would cream his pants over this shit. It reminds me of this (apparently misattributed) Huxley quote:

Just stop Amazon making deals with every local police/sheriff's department in the country and they go away on their own.

      > We've quite literally PAID to create a mass surveillance system in every neighbourhood

      Tax money, too.

He did say that "Brave New World" was written as a critique of his brother's friends' grand plan for all of society.
