     Why? Because if I were Xi and I wanted to hurt America, I wouldn't announce counter tariffs, I would immediately start selling all those US Bonds and then immediately exchanging the USD into CHF or EUR.

     @MechaSilvio the dollar bonds are kept on books because china is basically asking everyone to let china pay usd debt in exchange for rmb. no reason to clear it until the debt comes due.
     
     another use is of course buying up physical gold.

     I think it would take, optimistically, 15 years for America to reindustrialize to the point the same products available now exist again 100% home made. And the will to make it happen ofc.
     
     The immediate problem is tech and military are crippled by being unable to manufacture basic electronic components (transistors, resistors, gates) at scale to assemble equipment

     15 years is extremely optimistic. the average industrial generator lead time in the west is like 3 years. if GAE really wants to, they have to go back to basic power and chem industrials, then materials. I have no idea how long but china took like 50 years.
