Trade *can* benefit both countries, the mistake is to just claim that it by definition does.

@sickburnbro Wow Ronald Reagan is even dumber than I thought.
Protectionism is how you acquire wealth for your country.

@professionalbigot69 @sickburnbro I always note that American cars that were made at that time (late seventies) were 80% sh!t. When Reagan said stuff like that what people heard is "we shouldn't have to live in a perpetual state of poverty just to keep letting union thugs build crap that can't last half the length of a four-year loan". Almost all "lemon laws" on the books of states were born from this era.
TDLR, Pence might as well be citing some Herbert Hoover quote concerning buggy whip manufacturers.

@professionalbigot69 @EvilSandmich as much as I'd like to do that, I don't think it's that simple. Unions did have a lot to do with it, but not unions themselves, but that the UAW had enough strength to make an example of one of the big three and then bend the other.
You can blame the management for complying, perhaps, but it's probably 75% UAW / 25% management
Also Days of Rage shows you how much people felt things were falling apart.
