*sigh* Just read a thread where it looked like the poster was arguing with invisible people. Turns out the whole thread was auto-reposted from Twitter, so we're seeing just the poster's angry responses to the ignorant (and, to us, invisible) replies they got on Twitter. This is an unexpected side effect of auto posting: A peek at Twitter Rage that I really did not need to see on my Mastodon timeline.

I'm begging you, folks. Commit to one or the other. Don't Twitterize the Fediverse.

@vaguelyweird Well put! That's what it feels like! It's like you're in a yoga class and one person is on their phone with someone else having an ugly and loud argument.

I've had to mute auto repost keywords in my timeline. It's odious.

why would I want to listen to someone who is shouting and not listening?

@vaguelyweird I was intentionally vague. It's someone I used to follow Over There and who I have great respect for.

@Rachel_Thorn right now, just "RT" has gotten most of them. I didn't see that thread you were talking about though.

I saw a post from someone yesterday where she'd added a filter for the string "RT @" to remove any twitter auto-reposts from her timelines. Thought I'd mention it in case it's useful to you.

Agreed. I will never auto cross-post, or even RT directly, but may post a link to something interesting to me and perhaps other people in the Fediverse, that I find there.

I retain a presence on Twitter - for 'reasons'.

      Is that OK?

One of the joys about how Mastodon works is that people who insist on posting things that the folks around them don't like, won't get boosted, but will get unfollowed, or even blocked. The poisonous posts will be invisible, & the poisoner will eventually stop. It's beautiful!

@Rachel_Thorn yeah I'm very much part of the #TwitterMigration but have unfollowed people doing this – it is not useful to have a load of Twitter stuff cross-posted here out of context and with the tone all wrong

@Bigbreakfast_Irl I agree. I think such folks still think of the bird site as their “home,” and Mastodon as an emergency shelter.

@Rachel_Thorn I have consciously unfollowed those doing this.
      - it looks weird
      - its a reminder that the tone in birdy land is totally different to here

A solution for the feet in both camps peeps is to toot here and share on twitter, but not the other way around

@pete @danidictates Precisely. The vitriol has been carefully cultivated over the years by the cursed Algorithm. I am hoping people will adjust to the culture here.

@danidictates @Rachel_Thorn The thing is, the vitriol is cultural, and I'm sure some people will work hard to introduce it to Mastodon.

It will be interesting to see how the tools support people keeping spaces respectful, collaborative, productive, enjoyable.

I’m taken aback by the response to this toot. When I saw I had so many notifications, I thought for sure people had come to criticize me for trying to tell others how to use Mastodon. It turns out a lot of people are as annoyed by this practice as I am.:surprised:

@wombatarama @Bigbreakfast_Irl What I found when I decided to step away in April was that the site has been poising my soul. The problem wasn’t Musk or Trump. The problem was the algorithm. It’s addictive, and like so many addictive things, it’s really, really bad for you. It made me an unpleasant and unhappy, stressed out person. So even if Musk were to disappear and the company became “effective” again, I would never go back. Ditto for Facebook and Instagram.

@Rachel_Thorn @Bigbreakfast_Irl I still think of that place as my home that has been taken over by an evil dictator and I still hope he will be conquered someday. But I also am being driven crazy by people crossposting everything from their accounts there! I've been on the internet long enough to know that the thing to do in a new place is to figure out the culture before you post. A firehose of stuff from another site just seems rude.
