I can't imagine learning English as a second language, I barely understand it as a first language.

I'm a native English speaker and took two semesters of German in university.
I was amazed and delighted that I could just learn a small list of pronunciation rules for letters and a short list of letter combinations and that would be it, I'd know how to pronounce anything in German and stand a good chance of knowing how to spell any word knowing how it was pronounced.
@RickiTarr My kids are learning English as a second language. I keep telling them not to be sad if they get the spelling wrong - it's chaos pure and simple.*
French is refreshingly straightforward by comparison.
*) I'm the first to admit that as a native German speaker, I'm not exactly arguing from a position of strength here.

@RickiTarr It’s the easiest of the 10+ languages I have learned.
Consider that we don’t learn by hearing first and later try to spell that nonsense like native speakers, we learn the writing at the same time. So it doesn’t really matter that much.
